Complementing the University of Illinois' role as a leader in the nation, International Programs and Studies (IPS) coordinates, promotes, and supports international activities on campus. Through its various offices and units, IPS fosters international expertise by facilitating faculty and student research abroad, coordinating international exchanges and study abroad, supporting international scholarly activities on campus, and leading public engagement in international affairs.

International Programs and Studies Units

Program in Arms Control, Disarmament and International Security
The Program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security (ACDIS) is an interdisciplinary research, teaching, and public service program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign devoted to advancing the study of war and peace and problems of international security. Established in 1978, the program's international security emphasis now includes: emerging infectious diseases, energy sustainability and energy security, cyber security and cryptography, nuclear nonproliferation, conflict management and operations research, and military history.

China Executive Leadership Programs
The China Executive Leadership Programs (CELP) have been providing Executive Education to high level professionals and decision makers in China since 1993. Faculty from the College of Business, College of Law, ACES, and the Institute for Government and Public Affairs teach in these programs. CELP participants receive excellent lectures and practical information in their fields, and benefit immensely from cross-cultural interactions with professors, U.S. business people, government officials and University of Illinois students. Many of the participants are administrators in China’s largest banks and municipalities. The participants have very high potential and are promoted to leadership positions upon their return to China. The programs offered by CELP have a positive and significant impact on many important institutions in China. CELP has provided over 120 programs. More than 2500 high level business leaders, bankers, academicians and government leaders have graduated from the China Executive Leadership Programs.

Center for Global Studies
In cooperation with the campus' 11 colleges, the Center for Global Studies (CGS) works to globalize teaching, research, and outreach programs at Illinois. Global studies (GS) is a central thematic priority, focused on producing and disseminating knowledge about two increasingly determining human conditions: (1) the growing connectedness of the world’s diverse peoples, denoted by profound differences of language, culture, religion, class, race, and gender and national, ethnic, and tribal identities and loyalties; and (2) the enlarging and accumulating interdependencies of peoples and states that posit cooperation as an imperative if they are to reach their competing and converging objectives and to realize their animating values.

European Union Center
The University of Illinois European Union Center (EUC) was established in 1998 with financial support from the European Commission and is one of ten original EU centers in the United States. In 2003, the US Department of Education designated the Center as a Title VI National Resource Center and Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship Program. The EUC brings together faculty from departments and disciplines across campus to promote the study of the European Union, its institutions and policies, and EU-US relations. Working with other campus units and other institutions, the EUC also creates high quality, high profile programs that serve Illinois businesses, policy makers working on EU issues, high school teachers and students, and the general public.

Institutional and Faculty International Collaboration
The office of Institutional & Faculty International Collaboration (IFIC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign plays a key role in advancing the university's efforts in the areas of international research and education. The primary responsibilities of the office include drafting, negotiating, and processing formal agreements between the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and foreign partner universities, institutions, foundations, and research agencies. IFIC also maintains a database of current and pending international agreements, as well as an archive of past agreements.

International Engagement, Communications and Protocol
International Engagement, Communications and Protocol (IECP) promotes the University of Illinois' global reach and achievements in research, teaching, and public engagement to both internal and external constituencies and acts as an information resource for groups outside of the campus. To this end, IECP coordinates projects such as the Illinois International Review, Global Viewpoint, and two television programs, "The Ambassador Series" and "Illinois International." In addition to these functions, IECP also serves as the campus protocol office, offering advising services for departments or colleges hosting national or international governmental representatives.

International Forum for US Studies
The study of U.S. culture takes place among scholars in many parts of the globe, but most scholars of U.S. culture living and working in the United States are unfamiliar with this work by their foreign colleagues. The Forum works to internationalize the practice of "American Studies" in the U.S. by placing foreign and domestic scholars in dialogue. Simultaneously, it fosters scholarly relations across multiple national boundaries and regions outside the United States by bringing scholars from all parts of the globe together for shared research residencies and conferences. It is our belief that these multiple angles of vision, forged in the academic traditions and national contexts of each participant's scholarly community, will yield a more complex understanding of the many facets of U.S. culture than is otherwise possible.

International Student and Scholar Services
The staff of the International Student and Scholar Services office (ISSS) is committed to providing culturally sensitive services of the highest quality to international students and scholars. ISSS staff utilize their collective experience in language, culture, federal regulations, document production and social and academic programming to enrich the stay of international students, scholars, and their families. Assistance begins prior to arrival on campus through welcome letters and information, continues once the student or scholar arrives on campus with comprehensive check-in and orientation programs, and follows throughout the individual’s stay on campus. ISSS staff is available to advise international students and scholars on federal immigration regulations affecting their stay at the University of Illinois. ISSS also provides assistance to University units wishing to host international scholars or hire international faculty and staff.

Study Abroad Office
The Study Abroad Office (SAO) seeks to provide and facilitate a range of study and education opportunities abroad, consonant in breadth and quality with on-campus Illinois curricula. SAO offers opportunities for short or long duration according to curricular objectives and in consideration of students' co-curricular and personal obligations, at a range of costs and with opportunities for scholarship or subvention, such that study abroad opportunity is available to all students in good standing. Women and Gender in Global Perspectives
